Puppeteers of Color Social
2019 - 2022
Puppeteers of Color Social
POCS was a grassroots social club for BIPOC puppeteers in America
organized by Jamillah Hinson and Allyson Gonzalez
Based in Chicago, with over a dozen members nationwide. Founded by queer Black & brown folks in January of 2019. We hosted showcases, networking and skill sharing events in Chicago, as well as provided our members access to resources, space and funds to create original puppet works for adults, without any artistic restrictions. Our main focus was to empower BIPOC puppeteers to continue devising new work and amplify their voices in the American arts community.
The pandemic changed the scope of what we could safely accomplish,
so we decided with heavy hearts in January of 2022 to say farewell for now.
Big thanks to University of Chicago for inviting us to be apart of their Chicago Performance Lab residency in Fall 2019, and all of the art organizations, near and far, who reached out for partnership opportunities. The importance of our work was acknowledged by the community right off the bat, and with our members accomplishing the wonderful things they did with the resources we circulated, I am extremely proud of the magic my co-founder and I conjured up during our time together.
